The “Daruieste Viata” Association announced on November 24, that it has completed the first building of the Children’s Hospital constructed entirely from donations and sponsorships, where some of the sections of the Marie Curie Hospital will be relocated.

The first hospital in Romania, entirely built from donations and sponsorships in the courtyard of the Marie Curie Children’s Hospital in Bucharest, is ready to receive its first patients, less than 5 and a half years from the start of construction.

The hospital was erected from the donations of 350,000 Romanians and sponsorships from 8,000 companies and will be the first dedicated hospital for children with cancer in Romania. The largest sponsorship came from Petrom company – 10 million euros offered for equipping the hospital.

The hospital has 9 levels and will include departments for oncology, radiotherapy, surgery, and neurosurgery, as well as a cinema and a playground for children.

The hospital is in the final stages of obtaining operating permits. Most likely, it will host its first patients next year.

However, ‘Give Life’ doesn’t stop here and will also construct a second hospital building on the site, where all the sections of the current Marie Curie Hospital will be entirely relocated – the first medical campus in Romania.”

At this moment, parents of sick children in Romania have a place to treat their child, and they will no longer have to go abroad. I feel a great emotion because everything until now has been difficult, but I believe that the real challenges are just beginning. Change is happening slowly, with much resistance, with extensive training, with a lot of education. But we will do it because we want to change stories,” stated Carmen Uscatu, co-founder and president of Daruieste Viata NGO.

“We sincerely thank everyone who has donated. In a country where we have increasingly less trust in each other, over 350,000 people and over 8,000 companies have contributed money to build this hospital. It’s proof that we, Romanians, can do it together, and ‘it’s not possible’ or ‘it’ll do’ is not, in fact, our story; it’s someone else’s story. From today, it’s time not to let them tell us this story anymore because, from today, we can tell them that ‘we built a hospital.'” said in her turn Oana Gheorghiu, co-founder and vice president of the NGO.

“Until now, the first thought of a parent, when their child received such a devastating diagnosis, was to take their child abroad. Well, now we have ‘abroad’ here, with us, in Romania. A hospital built by all of us because the authorities have not done this so far. It is a huge slap in the face that the Romanian people give to politicians. Look, in 30 years, they haven’t managed to do what we all, together, have achieved. It’s an immense ray of hope for all of us and a starting point for politicians to also get to work,” Paula Herlo, honorary president of Daruieste Viata Association, also said.
