Code Orange for heavy rains in 18 Romanian counties till Tuesday, potential Code Red for floods

Meteorologists have issued a Code Orange alert for rainfall valid as of Sunday, 4 p.m. through Tuesday evening at 9 p.m. At the same time, a Code Yellow warning for rains until Tuesday at 9 p.m. for most of the country’s regions.

Moreover, hydrologists consider issuing a Code Red for floods this evening.

18 counties in Oltenia, western and northern Muntenia, southern and western Transylvania, the southern half of Banat and southwestern Moldavia are under the Code Orange alert for rainfall. Weathermen expect falls will mount to 50 liters per square meters and even up to 70 l/sqm locally.

During this time, the temperatures will be lower than at this time of the year, barely reaching 26-27C.

As for the Code Red potential alert for floods, hydrologists say that such immediate warnings could be released for small rivers as of Sunday and for medium and large rivers as of Monday.

The Interior Ministry has convened an emergency command on Sunday morning due to the bad weather, informing that, following the latest torrential rains 28 localities from 15 counties are affected – Alba, Arad, Bihor, Buzău, Braşov, Călăraşi, Cluj, Constanţa, Covasna, Harghita, Mureş, Olt, Sibiu, Teleorman, Vâlcea and Bucharest. Over 1,300 people are without electricity in three localities in Bacau and Botosani and that traffic got down to one lane in both directions on county road 112 F in Brasov because rocks had fallen down on the road.

In Alba tens of households have been flooded. 14 locals from Sona commune in Alba county have been evacuated from their houses.

Over 5,000 policemen have been deployed in the affected areas on Sunday, to help the population cope with the floods, while their number is expected to rise up to 9,220.
