Code Orange for snowfall and blizzards in Moldavia, in mountainous regions, Code Yellow on extended areas

The National Meteorology Administration (ANM) has issued several Code Orange and Code Yellow warnings, in force as of Wednesday afternoon to Thursday evening and affecting dozens of counties in the country, especially in Moldavia, Dobrogea and Transylvania. In the mountains, wind gusts will reach 140 km/h.

As of Wednesday, January 17, 14.00h, until Thursday, January 18, 22.00h, there will be in force a Code Yellow for significant quantitative precipitations, predominantly snowfall, and strong winds.

According to the meteorologists, during the above-mentioned time-frame, snowfall will take place in the mountainous areas, leading to a consistent layer of snow.

Wednesday afternoon and in the first part of the night of Wednesday to Thursday, mixed precipitations will start in Transylvania, mainly snow.

In the second part of the night of Wednesday to Thursday, in Moldavia, Dobrogea, northern Oltenia and small areas in northern Muntenia snowfall will be registered.

The water quantities will exceed 15-20 litres per square metre and on isolated areas 30-35 l/sq m.

The winds will gradually increase in most of the country, mainly in the south, the centre, the eastern regions and in the mountains, where there will be wind gusts of 50-70 km/h and locally in Moldavia, Dobrogea and on the mountain ridges will reach 70-80 km/h, with temporary blizzards.

The ANM warns that in the south, south-eastern and in the central part of the country, on local areas, there will be glazed frost.

During January 18, 18.00h to 20.00h, a Code Orange warning will be in force in Banat Mountains, the Southern Carpathians and the Curvature Carpathians, where phenomena like strong winds, blizzards and snowdrifts will take place.

According to meteorologists, in the Banat Mountains, the Southern Carpathians and the Curvature Carpathians, the speed of wind gusts will exceed 80-90 km/h, and on the ridges will reach 120-140 km/h, with blizzards and snow, and visibility will fall below 50 m.

Also, a Code Orange warning will be in effect on January 18, from 1.00h to 17:00h, when in the counties of Iasi, Vaslui, Vrancea, Galati, Tulcea and in the low areas of ​​Neamt and Bacau counties will manifest blizzards and strong winds.

Thus, according to the ANM, in the counties of Iasi, Vaslui, Vrancea, Galati, Tulcea and in the low areas of ​​the Neamt and Bacau counties there will be wind intensifications with speeds of 75-85 km/h and temporary snowfall.
