Code Orange in 9 counties and Bucharest for heat wave. Code Yellow for rainfalls, storms and hail in rest of Romania. Death toll reaches 6

The National Weather Administration (ANM) has issued, on Sunday, a Code Yellow warning for atmospheric instability for the western, northern, central, north-eastern regions and the mountain areas, in force August 6-8, as well as two Code Orange and Code Yellow advisories for heat wave for the regions of Oltenia, Muntenia and Dobrogea for August 7.

According to the weather service, in the interval during August 6, 18:00h-August 8, 6:00h, in the western, northern, central, north-eastern regions and the mountain areas, temporarily, the atmospheric instability will be accentuated and will manifest itself through storms, torrential downpour, frequent lightning and hail. The rain falls will exceed locally 20 litres/square meter and, in isolated areas, 40-50 litres/square meter.

Such phenomena will be more frequent on the Sunday night through Monday morning in the mountain regions, as well as in Crisana, Maramures, Transylvania, Banat as well as in large parts of Moldova.

Throughout Monday and during Monday to Tuesday night, atmospheric instability will continue mostly in the hill and mountain areas, as well as in Transylvania, Moldova and Maramures.

On the other hand, the Code Orange for heat wave will comprise nine counties in Oltenia, Muntenia and Dobrogea, as well as Bucharest.

Thus, Monday, the heat wave will persist in Oltenia, Muntenia and Dobrogea, where thermal discomfort will remain particularly high. Minimum temperatures will not go below 20 degrees Celsius.

In the counties of Dolj, Olt, Teleorman, Giurgiu, Ilfov, Calarasi, Ialomita, Constanta, and in the low areas of Mehedinti, as well as in Bucharest City, the maximum temperatures will frequently soar between 36 and 39 degrees, while the Temperature Humidity Index (THI) will be of 82-84 units.

The death toll due to heat wave has reached 6 people on Sunday. The latest casualties are a shepherd aged 60 has died due to the heat wave on a field in Cavadinesti, Galati County. Another man, aged 48, has died in Vaslui (north-eastern Romania) while working in a neighbour’s courtyard.
