Constitutional Court: Kovesi must come for hearings on the 2009 elections in Parliament

The Constitutional Court has partially admitted on Tuesday the notification filed by the two speakers of the Parliament chambers, Calin Popescu Tariceanu and Liviu Dragnea, regarding the obligation of the anti-corruption chief prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi to go for hearings in the parliamentary committee probing into the presidential elections of 2009. However, the constitutional judges have overruled the other request that the Prosecutor’s Office should send a copy of the closed file to the inquiry committee.

The CCR argues that the DNA head should go to the parliamentary inquiry committee on the 2009 elections or to answer the questions in writing. Yet, the same constitutions judges consider that the Prosecutor’s Office has no obligation to send a copy of the file to the parliamentary committee investigating the 2009 presidential elections.

The Senate speaker Calin Popescu Tariceanu and the Chamber speaker Liviu Dragnea have notified the Constitutional Court on September 13, over a potential judicial conflict between the Parliament and the Public Ministry due to Kovesi’s denial to come to the inquiry committee to be heard on the 2009 elections topic.

Dragnea and Tariceanu argued that the denial of the DNA chief prosecutor comes against “the activity of the Romanian people’s supreme representative body” and prevents the Parliament from passing a resolution.

They also asked the CCR to compel the Prosecutor’s Office to immediately send the copy of the elections’ file to the inquiry committee.
