Demographic aging process deepens, Romanians over 65 are by 350,000 more than young people

The demographic aging process has deepened as compared to January 1, 2017, due to a slight decrease of the share of young people (0-14 years old) and a higher share of the elderly population (over 65), the National Statistics Institute (INS) informed on Thursday.

The demographic aging index has increased to 110.7 elderly people to 100 young people (3.614 million against 3.264 million).

The average age of the population was of 41.3 years, by 0.2 years higher than on January 1, 2017.

On January 1, 2018 the population by domicile decreased to 22.94 million, by 0.2% lower than on January 1, 2017.

The urban population and women are the majority (56.4% and 51.2% respectively).

The population in urban areas was of 12,508 million, down by 0.1% against January 1, 2017. By gender, women were 11,358 million, down by 0.2%.

By group ages, the highest share was of 45-49 years old (8.6%) – 8.8% for men and 8.3% for women.

The share of people aged 0-4 years was of 4.6%, lower than the group of 5-9 years (5%) and the group of 10-14 years (5.1%).
