The National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA) asked the Supreme Court to re-open a file against deputy PM Paul Stanescu, referring to deeds committed in 2010. The case had been previously investigated by DNA Craiova and was closed in 2013. The first hearing is due on January 25.

The case is targeting deeds while Paul Stanescu was president of the Olt County Council. At that time, in 2019, anti-corruption prosecutors from Craiova investigated the way a public institution had financed the Aluminia ALRO Slatina football club.

The investigations started following a report made by the Court of Accounts in 2010, pointing to a non-reimbursable financing of over RON 2 M. Paul Stanescu led the Olt County Council from 2008 to 2016. DNA Craiova closed the file in 2013.

President Ioahnnis rejected Paul Stanescu as the interim PM on January 16. Stanescu has taken over the duties as deputy PM and minister of Development from Sevil Shhaideh, after she had resigned at former PM Tudose’s request following the investigation in the Belina file.
