The National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) has requested the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ – Supreme Court) celerity in the trials of Liviu Dragnea and Darius Vâlcov, shorter terms for the two files.

On Wednesday, the prosecutors have filed to the Supreme Court two requests to shorten the deadlines set by the 5-judge panels for the two defenders. That means DNA wants the hearings to take place sooner than May 20 and June 11, respectively.

In the applications filed to the High Court, the National Anticorruption Directorate invokes the principle of celerity in judging corruption cases.

The application for the file in which Liviu Dragnea was sentenced to 3 years and 6 months of imprisonment with execution in first court comes in the context in which one of the judges will retire as of June 1. Replacing him means the recommencement of hearings already made in this case.

The Supreme Court postponed on Monday to May 20 the sentence in the file of fictitious hiring at Teleorman General Department of Social Services and Child Protection (DGASPC), in which PSD leader Liviu Dragnea was sentenced in first court to 3 years and 6 months in jail for the offence of instigating to abuse of office. The ICCJ judges have admitted Dragnea’s lawyers request to postpone the DGASPC Teleorman file on May 20, 11.00h.

On Tuesday the Supreme Court decided to postpone to June 11 the file on Darius Valcov, former mayor of Slatina and Finance Minister, in which he was sentenced in first court to 8 years imprisonment for influence peddling and money laundering. Valcov did not attend the hearings, but sent the court a request for postponement in order to hire a lawyer. Valcov was indicted in May 2015 for influence peddling and money laundering and for conducting financial operations, as trade activities incompatible with the office, by using the information obtained due to the official position.
