The Catholic Church and the Ministry of Education have signed on Monday a protocol on teaching Religion, regarding Roman Catholic cult in Romanian language, Roman Catholic cult in Hungarian and Greek Catholic cult for pre-university teaching and for the organization of catholic theological education. The protocol was signed on Monday at the Ministry of Education and Research offices by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Bucharest, Monsignor Ioan Robu, as President of the Bishops’ Conference of Romania, by the Minister of Education, Sorin Cîmpeanu and by Victor Opaschi, Secretary of State for Cults.

Students may participate in religion classes if they make a written request, a provision which entered into force on March 9, after the Constitutional Court ruled on November 12, 2014 that Article 18, paragraph 2, thesis 1 of the National Education Law is unconstitutional. The article had provided that the request was to be submitted by the students who do not want to participate in religion classes.
