Emilia Șercan: First Romanian Nominated for European Journalist of the Year

Journalist Emilia Șercan was nominated along with 17 other journalists from several countries for the “PRIX EUROPA – European Journalist of the Year 2024” award. It is the first time that a journalist from Romania is nominated in this category. The prize is awarded by the Council of Europe, the European Parliament and the European Cultural Foundation.

“I still can’t believe it”, was Emilia Şercan’s reaction, published on her Facebook account. “The nomination, along with 17 other journalists from Sweden, Denmark, Ukraine, Hungary, Norway, Germany, UK and Greece, is worth as much as the award itself. Happy and grateful,” she added.

The winner of the prize will be announced on October 11, in a gala that will be organized in Berlin. “PRIX EUROPA wants to reward a European journalist who has stepped out of his comfort zone and demonstrated creativity, courage and impact on society or his audience. We are looking for an innovative journalist, dedicated to the truth despite global disinformation. A person immune to political propaganda and populism, who aims to ensure transparency, ready to investigate and discover the truth to inform the world,” the contest website says.

So far, within the “PRIX EUROPA” awards, journalistic products from Romania have been nominated in other categories. This year, in the “Radio Fiction” category, a production of the National Radiophonic Theatre, “Prison Colony”, is also nominated. A TVR product, “Three days about Natalia” is nominated in the “Video Documentary” category.

In the year 2023, the prize “PRIX EUROPA – European Journalist of the Year 2024” was offered to all 418 journalists working at the public broadcaster in Ukraine.

In previous years, the award was won by journalists from countries such as Latvia, Bulgaria, Belarus, Austria, France, Turkey, Germany.

Journalist Emilia Șercan has become famous for her investigations in PressOne over the PhD theses of politicians, police chiefs, ministers, current and former officials, with some of these proved to have been plagiarized.
