Ex-leader of Cluj County Council Horea Uioreanu, sentenced to six years and four months in prison

Former president of the Cluj County Council Horea Uioreanu has been sentenced on Wednesday to six years and four months in prison for bribe taking, forgery in deeds under private signature and attempt of money laundering. The ruling pronounced by the Cluj Court of Appeal is final.

The judges have revised one of the charges against Uioreanu from complicity to money laundering to attempt of money laundering.

Initially, a previous court had sentenced the former local leader from Cluj to six years and six months in prison and today, the final sentence has been practically cut short by two months.

Businessman Ioan Bene has been sentenced in the same file to three years and eight months in prison, while sentences previously ruled by the Cluj Tribunal have been maintained for businessman Vasile Pogacean (3 years in prison), for former Liberal county councilman Ioan Petran (3 years on probation) and for a former development manager of a private company, Gabriel Davidescu (2 years and 8 months on probation).

Horea Uioreanu is expected to go turn in to the Police to be placed under arrest.

Horea Uioreanu was detained by anti-corruption prosecutors in May 2014 for five charges of bribe taking, forgery in deeds under private signature and complicity to money laundering and has been subsequently placed under preventive arrest for 29 days, next to businessmen Bene and Vasile Pogăcean. The three have been under judicial control since March 30, 2015.
