Dan Voiculescu (photo) was acquitted by the Supreme Court on Wednesday in the Antena Group-RCS & RDS blackmail file. Camelia Voiculescu, his daughter, was given one year and six months suspended sentence for complicity to blackmail. Sorin Alexandrescu was sentenced to four years and six months.
The judges of the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ – Supreme Court) acquitted Daniel Matiescu, Director General of Intact Publishing SRL and sentenced to 2 years in jail Serban Pop, the former head of Fiscal Administration Authority (ANAF). SC Intact and Antena Group, as legal persons, were acquitted for the charge of complicity to blackmail. Antena Group is to pay a criminal fine of RON 200,000 and to air the sentence, ten times in a month, during 18.00h and 20.00h. The rulings are final.
At the last hearing, the prosecutors requested higher sentences for the defenders, but the defenders have requested the acquittal.
Dan Voiculescu, founder of Intact Group, and his daughter Camelia Voiculescu were sent on trial on October 1, 2013, along with Sorin Alexandrescu, former Director General of Antena TV Group SA and former ANAF chief Serban Pop. Sorin Alexandrescu was charged with blackmail, whereas Dan Voiculescu and his daughter with complicity to blackmail. Serban Pop was charged with using, by any means, of information not aimed to be public, or allowing unauthorised persons to such information. In the same file was also under trial for complicity to blackmail the Director General of Intact Publishing SRL, George Daniel Matiescu.
According to the investigators, during April 16-May 21, 2013, Sorin Alexandrescu blackmailed Ioan Bendei, the RCS&RDS administrator, on issues of corruption, threatening to publicly reveal the deeds.
The corruption offences of which Ioan Bendei is accused are part of another criminal file investigated by the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA), involving besides Bendei, Alexandru Oprea, Dumitru Dragomir, RCS&RDS and other natural persons.
