Floods play havoc in central, eastern country. Two men dead
The rainfalls have played havoc through the country, in central and eastern Romania, also claiming two lives. Over 200 people are being evicted.
The forecasters have issued a yellow code and an orange code alert for heavy rainfalls and floods in these regions and the hydrologists issued a red code warning for floods on Trotus River’s tributary streams in Bacau and Covasna counties.
The Forecasters say that the orange code warning is valid until Friday 6 p.m. in Vrancea, Bacau, Vaslui, Neamţ, Iaşi, Suceava, Botoşani where rains are torrential with 50 l/sqm and 80l/sqm in the mountain areas.
In other seven counties (Harghita, Covasna, Argeş, Dâmboviţa, Prahova, Buzău şi Galaţi) there is a yellow code alert for rains, with 15…20 l/sqm and 40..50 l/sqm in Moldova and Eastern and Southern Carpathians.
The hydrologists warned that there will be floods on several rivers in Harghita, Covasna, Braşov, Buzău, Neamţ, Bacău, Vrancea, Iaşi, Vaslui and Galaţi, valid from Thursday until Saturday at 12:00.
A 70-year-old man in Ruginesti village in Vrancea died on Thursday night after falling down his bicycle and being taken by the waters of a flooded channel. His body has been dragged 150 metres away’ he was eventually found under a footbridge. 11 localities in Vrancea were affected by floods.
Another man, aged 41 from Livezi village in Bacau has died on Thursday night after being taken by a high flood while crossing a bridge to his way home.
Overall, 89 localities in Bacău, Covasna, Galați, Harghita, Neamț, Suceava and Vrancea have been affected by floods in the past 24 hours, withy over 200 people being evacuated.
Almost 80 people from Helegiu and Livezi villages in Bacau counties have been evacuated due to the increased flow of Tazlau river.
In Ciumani commune in Harghita, for instance, over 500 basements, courtyards and gardens but also 950 hectares of arable land were flooded following downfalls.
The railway traffic between Miercurea Ciuc and Comanesti was still closed down on Friday due to the drifts brought from the surrounding versants.
