What was his last wish?
The last wish of the musician Nicu Covaci, the founder and leader of the legendary rock band Phoenix, was that, after death, his body be cremated. This wish will be respected by those close to him, and the procedure will take place in Bucharest.
According to those close to the leader of the Phoenix band, Nicu Covaci, who died on Friday evening, his body is to be cremated. The members of the Phoenix band announced that on Tuesday, between 11.00-20.00 and Wednesday between 9.00-17.00, Nicu Covaci’s fans will be able to say goodbye to him, at the Banatul Philharmonic in Timisoara, where the lifeless body of the artist will be laid to rest.
According to those close to Nicu Covaci, on Wednesday, the artist’s body will be taken to Bucharest, where it will be cremated, and on Thursday the funeral ceremony will take place, in a private setting.
“Nicu’s wish is the letter of the law for us. In his last moments he said he wanted us to continue with the Phoenix because he didn’t fight for 62 years to lose the Phoenix. Then, his wish was for the ashes to be divided: half to be thrown into the sea, in Spain, and half to be placed next to his mother’s ashes, which he kept at home, on a shelf, and which would remain in Romania,“ said Costin Adam, the lead singer of the Phoenix band for G4Media.ro. Nicu Covaci’s mother, Tamara, died in 1992.
The former Phoenic band leader died as an Orthodox Christian, but the Romanian Orthodox Church does not hold services for the cremated. Thus, there will be no public ceremony with the presence of the Metropolitan of Banat.
Costin Adam announced that there will be a private burial ceremony, that will lack the military honors.
Nicu Covaci died on Friday evening, August 2, 2024, at the Timişoara County Hospital, where he had been hospitalized for several weeks, after his health worsened. In the spring of this year, he underwent a complicated surgical intervention to remove a brain tumor.
