The Google Street View cars are returning to Romania this spring. In the coming months, they will visit dozens of localities across the country to update Street View images for over 25,000 kilometers of roads.

The 360° image capture for Street View in Romania begins on April 1st. The Google Street View cars will travel through cities nationwide, from major cities such as Bucharest, Timișoara, Sibiu, and Ploiești, to smaller cities like Brad, Onești, Sulina, and Turda. The updated and complete list of areas and localities to be photographed by the Street View cars in Romania can be consulted here, in the “What areas are we mapping this month” section, where the country and desired county must be selected.

Street View has been available in Romania since 2010, when the first images of major cities were published on Google Maps. The national coverage of Street View was completed in 2012, when images were captured from 40,000 km of roads, across 39 cities and hundreds of tourist attractions. The expansion of Street View in Romania has continued steadily, with updated images from major cities and new tourist attractions added, such as Salina Turda, Bran Castle, Alba Iulia Fortress, the Brukenthal National Museum, the Danube River, and the Danube Delta. In 2023, in partnership with the Tășuleasa Social association, nearly 900 kilometers of Via Transilvanica were photographed, allowing the beauty of this trail to be explored virtually through Street View images on Google Maps. Via Transilvanica is a long-distance trail that starts in Putna, Bukovina, crosses Transylvania, and ends in Drobeta Turnu Severin, on the banks of the Danube. The most recent update to the Street View images in Romania took place in 2024.

Street View is a popular service offered by Google Maps, also available in Google Earth (in the browser or mobile apps). Currently, Google Maps is available in over 250 countries and territories, including the Arctic and Antarctica. This year, Google Maps celebrates 20 years since its launch. In recent years, the evolution of Google Maps has been closely tied to Gemini, Google’s AI platform. Leveraging Gemini’s creation and synthesis capabilities, combined with information about over 250 million places worldwide, Google Maps now offers users inspiration and suggestions for things to do and places to visit through natural queries.
