Green light for new airport in a popular tourist city in Romania

Brasov County Council will invest EUR 22 million in building the passengers gate of the future international airport Brasov-Ghimbav, which will have a total area of 11,000 sqm and three levels.

According to the architect in charge of the project, the works will be concluded in about one year and a half.

“We estimate to launch the public tender and sign the contract this autumn, while construction works are planned to start next year,” the chairman of Brasov County Council said.

The parking platform will be able to host three aircraft, which means the terminal could be transited by one million passengers every year.

The design of the airport is modular, so it could be extended in the future, with minimum costs.

The business plan of the airport will be also sent to the European Commission. According to the local leader, the EU’s practice is that such locations are privately operated. So, the local authorities consider the lease of the airport with operators paying a fee. As the head of the county council said, 2020 is a realistic timeframe for the conclusion of the airport, taking into account that funds are already provided.

The airport runaway is 2,850 metres long and 45 metres wide and it has already been made in 2014, following an investment of EUR 57.5 million.
