Hacker Guccifer to be extradited to the US
Marcel Lazăr Lehel, known as hacker Guccifer will be temporary extradited to the US, the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ – Supreme Court) has ruled on Friday.
He was indicted for breaking the e-mails of several US officials, among them former Secretary of State Colin Powell, and of several Romanian officials, among them the e-mail of George Maior, at the time head of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) and of MEP Corina Cretu.
The court decided to uphold the US authorities’ request for extradition.
On February 19 the Timisoara Court of Appeal had rejected the request, but the US authorities have filed an appeal.
The extradition is temporary, for 18 months at the most, during which Lehel will be in the US for the judicial procedures. If sentenced in the US he will serve his sentence in Romania.
