In 2024, 60% of Romanian patients admitted to Wiener Privatklinik sought oncological care
Wiener Privatklinik (WPK), one of Austria’s largest private hospitals, received more than 1.000 Romanian patients in 2024. Romania continues to be the leading source of international patients to the hospital, representing 26% of the total international patient base.
Cancer was the main health problem of Romanian patients seeking treatment at Wiener Privatklinik.
Approximately 60% of Romanian patients treated at Wiener Privatklinik last year accessed oncology services provided by the WPK Central European Academy Cancer Center, the most comprehensive private oncology center in Central and Eastern Europe. This continues a trend observed in previous years.
The most common diagnoses included breast cancer, skin cancer, lung cancer, and gastrointestinal cancer. Patients received innovative treatments such as immunotherapy, personalized targeted therapies, and minimally invasive surgical interventions, all tailored to their specific cases. These patients also benefited from the collaborative expertise of a multidisciplinary Tumor Board.
Following oncology treatments, the second most sought-after services were complex surgical interventions in specialties such as orthopedic-traumatology, internal medicine, and other surgical specialties. Many Romanian patients also sought second-opinion consultations to confirm diagnoses or recommended treatments. Additionally, patients aged 35 to 45 opted for preventive care through personalized check-up packages, which include comprehensive analyses and investigations.
“Romanian patients appreciate not only the quality of our medical care but also the short waiting times and the comprehensive support provided by our Romanian-speaking case management team, guiding them from the initial appointment through every step of their medical journey”, said Thomas Peter Ebm, Managing Director of Wiener Privatklinik.
Wiener Privatklinik’s continuous investments in state-of-the-art medical equipment and collaboration with over 300 internationally renowned experts— including physicians ranked in the Top 2% of the world’s most cited scientists by Stanford University—solidify its position as a leading medical destination for patients from Eastern Europe.
To accommodate the rising demand for medical services, Wiener Privatklinik has initiated a €50 million infrastructure expansion project. This project includes the construction of a new adjacent building, which will double the hospital’s current capacity. The new facility, currently undergoing consolidation, renovation, and outfitting with cutting-edge technology, is expected to become operational soon.
Wiener Privatklinik operates two representative offices in Romania, located in Bucharest and Timișoara. Additionally, patients can access online consultations via the WPK Online Healthcare Center, which connects them to experts in over 20 medical specialties.
