The third case of monkeypox diagnosed in Romania

The Ministry of Health announced that a new case of monkeypox has been diagnosed in Romania. It is the third case in our country, detected at a 31-year-old man.

The 31yo patient went to a hospital in Bucharest yesterday, telling doctors the symptoms appeared on June 10.

According to the Ministry of Health, the patient’s general condition is good and he remained hospitalized.

The second case of monkeypox was officially diagnosed in Romania yesterday – a 32-year-old man. He went at a medical clinic in Bucharest last week, and laboratory investigations confirmed today that the patient is infected with the monkey’s smallpox.

Monkeypox is not easily spread between people and requires close contact. The virus enters the body through damaged skin or mucous membranes, the respiratory tract, eyes, nose or mouth and through body fluids.

The World Health Organization announced on Tuesday that it would convene a meeting of its emergency committee on June 23 to assess whether monkeypox, a highly contagious disease that has begun to spread in Europe, is a public health “emergency” of international interest. This is the highest level of warning issued by the WHO, which currently only applies to the pandemic of coronavirus and polio. The increase in the number of cases is “unusual and worrying,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a news conference.
