The European Commission said on Wednesday that it estimated that between 60% and 80% of the European Union’s population had already been infected with Covid-19.

“It is estimated that between 60% to 80% of the EU population has by now had COVID,” EU health commissioner Stella Kyriakides told a news conference.

The EU public health agency said reported cases had covered about 30% of the European population so far, but if unreported infections were added, cases could be as high as 350 million, about 77% of the European population.

Along with the decline in coronavirus cases and deaths, the EU has entered a new phase of the pandemic, in which mass testing and mass reporting of positive cases are no longer needed, Stella Kyriakides said.

In preparation for this less acute phase of the pandemic, EU governments should speed up the immunization of people still unvaccinated against coronavirus, especially children, the European Commission said, adding that it is considering plans to develop new antiviral drugs.
