The mass immunisation of the population in Romania with a third dose of COVID-19 vaccines kicks off today.

To mark the moment, the front-line healthcare workers of the Matei Bals National Institute of Infectious Diseases will get their third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at the hospital unit.

The first person vaccinated will be the hospital manager, Catalin Apostolescu, primary care physician specialising in infectious diseases.

Interim Minister of Health Cseke Attila will be at the vaccination clinic at the Carol Davila Military Emergency University Hospital to receive his third dose of the vaccine.

“Starting today, anyone who has been fully vaccinated with two doses and are at least six months away from the second dose can request vaccination with a third dose. I recommend that to everyone and urge everyone to follow suit… There are over 1,100,000 Romanian citizens, healthcare workers and more who fall into this category and who can get vaccinated with the third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine,” said Cseke.

He announced that as of Tuesday morning, about 12,000 people had booked for a third dose on the COVID-19 immunisation platform.

As of this morning, on the platform where the third dose can be booked, about 12,000 people have booked an appointment for the vaccination. Our suggestion is for people who have not yet got vaccinated to get vaccinated,” said the minister.

Vaccinated individuals who are at least six months away from the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine can get their jabs starting today as well.

The third dose vaccinations will be performed only with mRNA vaccines. Thus, the third dose for people vaccinated with the Astra Zeneca vaccine will be from the ones manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna.

As Johnson & Johnson vaccinations started on May 4 in Romania, the people vaccinated with them will not need a booster yet.

Healthcare workers who refuse anti-COVID vaccination/testing can be fired

Minister Cseke Attila also explained that employees in the medical system who refuse anti-COVID vaccination and testing will have their employment contract suspended, and after 30 days dismissal can be reached, according to the bill promoted by the Ministry of Health. Asked about the introduction of the COVID-19 certificate for teachers as well, he said he would discuss with ministers.
