West Nile Virus Claims First Victim in Romania This Year

The first death due to the West Nile virus in Romania this season was recorded. It is about an 83-year-old patient from Suceava. Two others were hospitalized with the same diagnosis.

The patient, aged 83, also suffered from other diseases and died due to the aggravation of associated pathologies, according to the doctors. Doctors from Suceava confirmed, in August, West Nile virus infection in three patients, all over 80 years old.

“The 81-, 83- and 88-year-old patients presented with fever, headache, confusional syndrome and were diagnosed with meningitis, in which case a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) puncture is performed to identify the pathogen. Following the CSF analysis, West Nile virus was identified in all three patients. The 81-year-old patient had a favorable evolution and was discharged on August 17. The 83-year-old patient, having other comorbidities, unfortunately died yesterday (Monday) due to the aggravation of the associated pathologies, and the 88-year-old patient hospitalized on July 29 had an unfavorable evolution with the worsening of the general condition and transfer to ATI on August 1, his condition being still serious”, said the representatives of the Suceava hospital.
