InterCity Cluj-Napoca – Budapest train derailed near Keleti station
The InterCity Claudiopolis train from Cluj-Napoca to Budapest derailed on Sunday evening near the Eastern Railway Station in the Hungarian capital, the Hungarian railway company MÁV announced on Monday morning.
The InterCity IC 74 train heading to Budapest from Cluj-Napoca derailed on Sunday evening near Keleti station, disrupting traffic at Hungary’s main railway hub.
The train’s carriages, reportedly around 50 years old, caused a significant delay in service, according to index.hu.
A passenger on board described feeling a jolt during the derailment, initially unaware of the severity of the situation. Fortunately, there were no casualties, though an ambulance siren was heard nearby.
Another passenger shared on a Facebook group that the front part of one carriage followed one track while the rear veered onto another, causing the train to travel at an awkward angle until it stopped.
Although the train was moving slowly and did not overturn, the experience was described as terrifying.
The accident led to major delays and train cancellations at Keleti station, with experts working tirelessly to recover the derailed carriages and restore normal service.
Currently, Keleti station is not receiving or dispatching any trains, and affected services are being rerouted to other stations in Budapest.
