The Government will adopt next week an emergency ordinance to amend the conditions of the compensatory appeal law, Justice Minister Tudorel Toader has told HotNews.ro.

The solutions will be introduced, maybe even adopted next week. The law will be amended through emergency ordinance,” said the minister on Tuesday.

Minister Toader has met PM Viorica Dancila on Monday to present the results of the assessment over the effects of the law on the compensatory appeal and on which steps are to be followed.

The minister had a previous meeting with the premier on this topic last week, following the scandal stirred by the crime in Medias, committed by a recidivist released from jail earlier based on the compensatory appeal.

Six days ago, President Klaus Iohannis urged the Government in a press conference at Cotroceni Presidential Palace on Wednesday to urgently come up with solutions regarding the controversial compensatory appeal that allowed thousands of offenders to get out of prison earlier, with many of them committing new crimes. The head of state argued that Romanians should not be afraid for their safety.

The compensatory appeal law was voted on May 9, 2017 by the Chamber of Deputies by 175 votes (from PSD, ALDE and UDMR) to 85 against (PNL and USR). The form the law ended up in Parliament was substantially amended by the incumbent ruling coalition.

Tens of crimes (robberies, rapes, assaults) have been committed by the recidivists released from prison earlier based on the compensatory appeal.

The most recent cases have been the crime in Medias, where a 25yo was killed by a dangerous recidivist and a robbery attempt in Galati against an old man.
