Jean-François Bohnert, Laura Codruţa Kovesi’s contender for the upcoming European Prosecutor’s Office, is favorite to take over the helm of the French National Prosecutor’s Office, Romanian DNA’s counterpart, according to TV5Monde.
That means if Jean-François Bohnert is appointed head of the National Financial Prosecutor’s Office in France, Laura Codruta Kovesi will remain the only candidate running for the European chief prosecutor seat.
However, the current EU Council, which is endorsing Bohnert’s bid, is opposing that Kovesi takes over this position. But, the former Romanian DNA head enjoys the support of the European Parliament.
As negotiations between the two European bodies have failed in April, a final decision is expected after the new heads of the European institutions are officially appointed.
Following a secret vote in February this year, LIBE Committee in the EP has ranked Kovesi first for the European chief prosecutor (26 votes). French Bohnert has got 22 votes, while German Andres Ritter only one vote. Kovesi had been also the favorite of CONT Committee.
Two days ago, the Vice-President of the EPP group in the European Parliament, Siegfried Mureșan, has said that Kovesi‘s to become European Chief Prosecutor had increased after the agreement for the new EU top positions.
