Laura Codruţa Kovesi – Winner of the ‘European of the Year’ 2016 award granted by Reader’s Digest

The chief prosecutor of the National Anti-Corruption Directorate, Laura Codruţa Kovesi, has been named the winner of the European of the Year 2016 granted by Reader’s Digest, a distinction that recognizes “the courageous and constant fight against high level corruption”.
According to a release issued on Monday, it is the second time that a Romanian wins this award.
“The award recognizes the courageous and constant fight of Laura Codruţa Kovesi, head of DNA in Romania, against high-level corruption. As head of the agency appointed in May 2013 she has indicted a former prime minister and dozens of lawmakers, judges and business tycoons. (…) It is the second time that a Romanian wins this award; in 2010, it was received by Iana Matei, President of the ‘Reaching Out Romania’ Foundation, for supporting victims of human trafficking. Laura Codruţa Kovesic is another outstanding example of the values promoted by Reader’s Digest,” a press release from Tarsago Romania reads.
“The February issue of all European editions of Reader’s Digest, whose Romanian edition is owned by Tarsago Romania, includes a detailed profile of Laura Codruţa Kovesi signed by Andrew Higgins, a journalist with ‘The New York Times’. It shows how the former basketball player and law student, who followed her father’s prosecutor career, sparked the biggest political earthquake that shook Romania since the fall of communism in 1989,” the release reads.
According to the source, the article states that in the first nine months of last year, DNA has indicted more than 800 people for corruption.
