8 Million Euro Medical Equipment Fraud During Pandemic in Romania
An investigation carried out by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office in Bucharest targets a fraud of 8 million euros from European money, by manipulating the purchase of medical equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) announced that five searches were carried out in the capital of Romania on Tuesday, as part of an investigation into an 8 million euro fraud involving EU funds for the purchase of medical equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the cited source, in the period 2020-2022, a criminal network was established for the manipulation of public purchases of protective masks, disinfectants and other medical equipment for hospitals, schools and other state institutions. Thus, the suppliers of these medical equipment were predetermined.
Three people investigated in this case were taken to the EPPO office in Bucharest to be informed that they have the status of suspects. The supply of medical equipment was financed by the Recovery Assistance for Cohesion and Territories of Europe (REACT-EU) programme.
