British journalist, found dead in Bucharest apartment
British journalist David St. Vincent, correspondent for the National Geographic in Romania, was found dead on January 12th, in an apartment in downtown Bucharest. Bucharest Police are investigating the death, gandul.info reports.
According to evz.ro his decomposing body was found on January 12th and, at first, Police believed it was from natural causes. The paper reads that his friends believe natural causes might have been responsible for his death, as the 48 year old man suffered from epilepsy, had high blood pressure and an inner ear infection. British Police has handed the entire case to the Romanian Police.
British media reported the deceased was a gay rights activist. He was the author of the well known Insight Guide Romania and he was working on a website for tourism and trips to Romania. He arrived in Romania to write a tourist guide in 1994 and was a founding member of the Acceptance Group in Bucharest, later known as Accept group.
According to dailymail.co.uk, “Eric Gilder, a friend and English teacher in Papua New Guinea, said: ‘He was a perfectly British eccentric in the best possible way, like a character in an Evelyn Waugh or Graham Greene novel. He will be sorely missed.’ (…) Oxford University graduate Mr St Vincent wrote about 350 destinations and topics for the National Geographic Society covering more than 80 countries and territories, according to his CV. He was the sole author of the first travel guide for Iran, but was deported in 1992 while researching his Lonely Planet book, accused of planning to import Salman Rushdie’s novel The Satanic Verses.”
The British newspaper also informs that Mr St Vincent returned to Romania two years ago and was well known for his tweed jackets and Panama hats. He was an active supporter of Syrians opposing Syrian President Bashar Assad, and kept close contact with them.
St Vincent is survived by a brother, Peter Harris, 46, and his funeral will be held in Bucharest on February 18th.
