Distraint on mayor Chiliman’s goods goes down to RON 11. 6 M

The High Court of Cassation and Justice on Thursday admitted the appeal filed by the suspended District 1 mayor Andrei Chiliman in the sequester laid on his goods. The ruling is abolishing part of the prosecutor’s decision, thus reducing the sum under seizure to approx. RON 11.6 M, representing 30 percent of about RON 39 M. The ruling is final.

On June 22 prosecutors have levied on the properties of Chiliman and other three defendants amounting to RON 3 billion, approx., EUR 670 M.

Suspended mayor Andrei Chiliman, former PNL treasurer Vlad Moisescu, the mayor’s personal adviser Ioana Costescu and District 1 local council Ion Brad are subject to legal restrictions pending trial since June 19 in a file regarding the preferential assignment of some works to several private companies that would have paid the defendants 10 percent commissions of the total value of the contracts.

Chiliman’s last wealth statement filed in 2014 reveals an impressive fortune. He owns plots of land in Bucharest, Predeal mountain resort, Eforie Sud seaside resort, in Snagov. He also has 11 hectares of forest in Vernesti village, Buzau county and 16 hectares in some Gorj villages. His wife also owns land in Bucharest, Sinaia and Falciun commune, Vaslui. The two children of Chiliman family own land in Bucharest, Predeal and Vernesti, Buzau.

The suspended mayor is very well off for buildings. He has a 400-sqm apartment and an 847-sqm house in Bucharest, his wife is registered with two houses in Bucharest (663 sqm and 1,897 sqm), while his two children also own a 1,200-sqm house in Bucharest, a villa in Brasov, an apartment in Bucharest and a house in the countryside in Buzau.

His family also has two cars, jewelry rated for EUR 20,000 and art objects of EUR 150,000. His bank accounts have RON 180,000, EUR 87,000, USD 67,000 and CHF 10,000.
