EUR 1 M bail for ex-Finance minister Sebastian Vladescu

The National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA) has announced on Wednesday that former Finance minister Sebastian Vladescu is investigated under judicial control on bail, with the sum being set for EUR 1 M. The former minister is charged with bribe taking and influence peddling, and has a deadline of ten days to lodge the securities.

A bail of EUR 1 million has been set against defendant Sebastian Vladescu, which is to be lodged at the DNA’s disposal in ten days,” DNA says.

According to the anti-corruption prosecutors, during 2005-2014, Romanian officials of influential people would have received about EUR 20 M from a foreign company, based on some agreements, and in exchange for these sums of money the Romanians had to make sure the contracts would have been clinched and invoices would have been paid for the rehabilitation of some sections of the Bucharest-Constanta railway line. The Romanian side should also pay the overdue VAT fees for the rehabilitation of some other railway line that had been already made by the same company.

The modernization of the Bucharest-Constanta railway line (225km) lasted six years and its costs mounted to over EUR 820 M.

DNA has not mentioned what was the foreign company, but public information pointed that the works have been carried out by a joint venture Swietelsky – Wiebe – Takenaka.

Austrian authorities conducted several searches to the offices of Swietelsky constructions company in Linz last week, within the investigation associated to the file of the former Finance minister Vladescu, reported.

Ex-minister Vladescu is accused of having got a bribe of EUR 1 M in this case.
