Extradition procedure for Radu Mazare, initiated in emergency regime by the Justice Ministry
Interim Minister of Justice Ana Birchall (photo 1) has announced on Friday that she received the sentences from the Romanian courts in the case of former Constanta mayor Radu Mazare (photo 2) and has decided to initiate the extradition procedures in emergency regime.
“I confirm that we received today, May 10, at 13.00h, at the Justice Ministry, the documents from the Bucharest Court of Appeals and from the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ – Supreme Court) attesting the meeting of legal conditions to request the extradition of Radu Mazare,” Birchall said., according to ziare.com.
The interim Justice Minister said the legal framework to he applied will be the United Nations Convention against transnational organized crime, signed in Palermo in 2000, ratified by Law 365/2002. Also, the UN Convention against corruption.
Madagascar is part of both conventions.
Birchall added the Justice Ministry will work around the clock, because the file is huge and needs to be translated in record time.
She said the file has more than 600 pages and have to be translated by an authorized translator.
“The time is running out, the remand is of six days and time is going on sunce May 8,” Birchall added. “Actually, the Justice Ministry has only two days to send the extradition file in due time,” she said.
Former mayor of Constanta Radu Mazare, was remanded by the authorities in Madagascar on Wednesday.
Mazare is sentenced to 9 years in prison in the file regarding the retrocession of beaches. Radu Mazare is in Madagascar since the end of 2017.
“The Madagascar authorities have informed IGPR, through the International Police Cooperation Center, that a Romanian citizen, under international warrant for a 9-year jail sentence, has been remanded on May 8, for a period of six days,” the Romanian Police General Inspectorate (IGPR) informed.
