Former Mayor Cătălin Cherecheș Extradited from Germany, En Route to Romania
The former mayor of Baia Mare Cătălin Cherecheș – sentenced, in November, to 5 years in prison and fled to Germany a few hours before the sentencing – is extradited on Tuesday, as he is on his way to Romania to serve his prison sentence. In the first phase, he will be taken to Rahova Penitentiary, confirmed by Răzvan Doseanu, one of Cherecheș’s lawyers.
Cherecheș’s defense attorney said that, according to the documents sent to the German authorities by the Romanian Ministry of Justice, the former mayor will first be taken to the Rahova Penitentiary, where he will be kept during the 21-day quarantine period. From Rahova, he will be taken to the Aiud Penitentiary, where he would spend a year, and from there, to the Baia Mare Penitentiary.
“In the documents sent to the German authorities, the Romanian authorities also indicated the cell in which he will be detained, its area, the number of people in the cell. It remains to be seen whether the conditions of detention will be respected”, the lawyer said to Digi 24.
Last week, the Superior Regional Court in Munich ruled that Cătălin Cherecheș can be extradited in Romania.
