The National Anti-corruption Directorate asks for the Chamber’s go-ahead to prosecute former Tourism minister Elena Udrea in the file related to the electoral campaign for the 2009 presidential elections. Prosecutors accuse Udrea of instigation to bribe taking, allegedly committed during her term as Tourism minister.

Anti-corruption prosecutors claim that certain money collected during the electoral campaign for the 2009 presidential elections originated from felonies.

Investigators started criminal prosecution against Elena Udrea in this case in September 2016 for allegedly committing five crimes related to money laundering, Now, they argue new evidence came up prompting them to extend prosecution against the former minister also for instigation to bribe taking.

Several people are investigated in this file, among whom Gheorghe Nastasia, former secretary general of the Tourism ministry at that time and Victor Tarhon (leader of Tulcea county council at that time).

Prosecutors accuse Elena Udrea that she made Nastasia and Tarhon (whose county council used to get finances for various projects from the Tourism Ministry) ask the representatives of several private companies to pay the counter value of some advertising services provided during the electoral campaign.

“The payment was done based on some fictitious contracts, while the connection between people who received the criminal funds and the providers was brokered by Elena Udrea. At the same time, she used to coordinate the persons who acted as brokers for the bank transfers so that the illegally obtained money should reach the companies that provided services related to the electoral campaign,” reads the DNA press release.

Elena Udrea is investigated under judicial control in this case.
