Prosecutors Charge Călin Georgescu with Incitement, Fraud, Promoting Fascist Ideas

The Prosecutor General’s Office announces the initiation of criminal proceedings against Călin Georgescu. He is being investigated for incitement to actions against the constitutional order, false statements regarding the sources of financing of the electoral campaign, and promotion of fascist and legionary ideas.

Digi24 sources say that judicial control has been ordered in the case of Călin Georgescu. The measure of detention for 24 hours was not taken. Georgescu was released around 6 pm after 5 hours of questioning to the cheers of the crowd chanting his name “Georgescu President”.

The Prosecutor General’s Office announces that Georgescu has been indicted in the case and that criminal proceedings have been initiated against him for the following offenses:

  • Incitement to actions against the constitutional order
  • Dissemination of false information
  • False statements (continuous offense) regarding the sources of electoral campaign financing and asset declarations
  • Initiating or establishing a fascist, racist, or xenophobic organization, as well as joining or supporting such a group in any form
  • Publicly promoting the cult of individuals guilty of crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, as well as publicly endorsing fascist, legionary, racist, or xenophobic ideas, concepts, or doctrines
  • Initiating or establishing an antisemitic organization, as well as joining or supporting such an organization in any form.

In front of the Prosecutor General’s Office, approximately 200 supporters of Călin Georgescu gathered, chanting, among other things, “Georgescu president” and “round 2, back”. Some members of the AUR party, including George Simion, were observed in the crowd.

The gendarmerie increased security measures around the Prosecutor’s Office, arguing: “The headquarters of the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice is part of the category of objectives of particular importance for the activity of the state, whose guard is permanently ensured by gendarmes (…) In this context, public order and safety measures were also taken in the external area of ​​the objective, given the presence of several people on site. We are able to adapt the gendarme deployment depending on the number of people present in the public space, in order not to jeopardize the smooth conduct of the institution’s activities and to ensure a climate of public order and safety.”

Former independent presidential candidate Călin Georgescu was picked up by traffic Police this morning to be taken for questioning, in the context of searches carried out in several counties targeting actions against the constitutional order, public incitement,
