Romania plans to reform the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” Police Academy with the help of the FBI

The Minister of Internal Affairs, Cătălin Predoiu, requested the support of the FBI to support the reform process within the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” Police Academy, in order to “strengthen the institutional capacity of this educational institution”.

Predoiu met, on Tuesday, with the director of the FBI, Christopher Wray, who paid a visit to Romania, according to a press release sent by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the cited source, Wray and Predoiu appreciated the “excellent” cooperation between the two institutions and highlighted the commitment for its continuation.

“During the meeting, the Romanian Minister of Internal Affairs highlighted the importance of joint activities, with an emphasis on the component of combating cross-border organized crime, namely drugs, human trafficking and cybercrime”, the MFA also states.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs also conveyed that it pays special attention to the destruction of criminal networks which, through their actions carried out including on the territory of Romania, endanger the safety of citizens.

“We already cooperate very well with the FBI in multiple directions to fight crime and thereby protect the rights of our citizens. The development of this cooperation can only be beneficial for the efficiency of our national operations on the established priorities, namely the countering of organized crime, drug trafficking, human beings, weapons, computer crime and terrorism”, said Predoiu.

The Interior minister appreciated the support given by the FBI for the training and improvement of the Romanian policemen in the Quantico Academy, as well as in the Bucharest Office.

“We want to build a partnership between the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” Police Academy and the FBI Police Academy at Quantico. We want to build, in perspective, a mentality, attitude towards the profession and institutional culture that will raise the efficiency of the MAI’s action in a context where the criminological phenomenon is becoming more and more sophisticated and internationally integrated. We are opening development paths that will continue for several years and that will necessarily include, in the coming years, the rethinking and modernization of all MAI structures, their adaptation to this new dynamic and complexity of challenges.(…) I thank the director of the FBI, Christopher Wray, for the openness and receptivity shown in our discussions, which we agreed to continue with practical application in concrete measures of cooperation”, Predoiu also declared.

Director Christopher Wray visited Romania this week and met with Romanian officials to demonstrate the FBI’s continued commitment to our strong partnerships and highlight ongoing cooperative efforts, says the FBI National Press Office in a press release sent by the US Embassy in Bucharest.

“The FBI works with its Romanian partners to combat the dynamic threat landscape both countries face today. Director Wray met with multiple senior officials from the Romanian government, including the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), the Romanian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MOIA), the Romanian Ministry of Justice (MOJ), and the Romanian Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO).
The meetings focused on the robust partnerships between the agencies and joint efforts to counter threats emanating from hostile nations, transnational organized crime, human trafficking, criminal and hostile nation state cyber activity, and malign foreign influence.

Director Wray thanked Romanian officials for their partnership, and the leaders discussed additional opportunities for further collaboration to combat criminal and national security threats facing Americans and Romanians,” says the Bureau.
