Romanian driver fined by EUR 1.7 M in France
A truck driver from Romania, aged 50, received a fine mounting to EUR 1.7 million in France after he had got caught last week near Perthus, in southern France, at the border with Spain, with 900 kilos of cannabis hidden among lemons.
Separate from the huge fine, the Romanian was also sentenced to 5 years in prison on Friday, and was banned to enter in France for the next 10 years, according to France Bleu.
The driver was returning from Spain and intended to reach Germany. The packs of cannabis resin were hidden among the lemon boxes from Spain.
The seizure was conducted a week ago and on Friday, after a quick trial, the Romanian was sentenced to 5 years in jail, plus the huge EUR 1.7 M fine and the 10-year interdiction to enter the French territory, Benoît Godart, the director of Perpignan customs told ladepeche.fr.
This customs operation comes after the seizure of several major drug transports in southern France.
