Romanian judge gets 22-year jail sentence for interventions in insolvency cases

Bucharest Court of Appeal sentenced judge Mircea Moldovan to 22 years in jail in a file related to interventions in insolvency cases. In the same file, businessman millionaire Dan Adamescu, owner of “Romania libera” local daily, Astra Asigurari and AXXA Life Insurance companies, as well as of Unirea Shopping Center and Otelul Galati football club, was sentenced to four years and four months in prison. Another female judge, Elena Roventa also got a 5 years and ten months jail sentence and judge Sorin Viziru also got a five-year jail sentence. Magistrate Ion Stanciu was also convicted to three years and eight months in prison.

Dan Adamescu is charged with giving a 20,000-euro bribe to judges Ion Stanciu and Elena Roventa so that they should give favorable rulings in two Adamescu’s insolvency cases. Besides the jail sentence, Adamescu was stripped of the right to manage or coordinate trading companies, in the country or abroad.

As for Mircea Moldovan, judge at the Bucharest Court, he received the highest sentence in the file- a 22-year imprisonment conviction- for interceding in some insolvency cases. Bucharest Court of Appeal gave Moldovan about six-year sentences for each count. Judges also decided to seize Moldovan RON 32,000, a Samsung TV set and a mobile phone.
