Romanian interlopers stole diesel fuel worth two million dollars from the Mihail Kogălniceanu military base for 4 years, DIICOT prosecutors announced, opening an investigation into the US federal government’s complaint. On Wednesday morning, the suspects were detained during extensive searches.

Organized crime prosecutors have conducted six house searches on Wednesday morning, in a case targeting the activity of an organized criminal group, specialized in committing crimes of aggravated theft and driving a vehicle without a driving license.

DIICOT investigators established that, starting with 2017, in Romania, several people formed an organized criminal group, which for four years allegedly stole liquid fuels belonging to the US government, especially diesel, from the military base of Mihail Kogălniceanu, as well as from the areas dedicated to military tactical exercises located in Constanța. The members of the group had well-established roles, according to the quoted source.

The prejudice mounts to USD 2 million. Seven people were taken for hearings at DIICOT.

So, although the Mihail Kogalniceanu base in Constanta, is one of the most guarded places in Romania, with over 1,000 US troops stationed here, seven Romanians managed to trick their vigilance and to steal millions tons of diesel for four years.

The thieves would take the fuel from the army generators, either directly from the base or during some NATO exercises. Overall, they stole over 1.5 million tons of diesel worth USD 2 million.

The 7 Romanian thieves worked at the company that supplied the generators used at the military base from Mihail Kogălniceanu. They always acted identically. They chose times when there were no soldiers in the area.

These irregularities have been reported by the US federal government.

Besides the searches  they conducted in Constanța, the anti-mafia prosecutors raided other 450 places. Taken directly from bed, some suspects did not understand exactly what happened when the masked men came over them and wanted to call the police. Another suspect even jumped out the window when the masked men entered his apartment.
