The ‘Fleet file’ has been quashed. Good news for former President Traian Basescu

The National Anti-corruption Department (DNA) prosecutors have decided to quash the “Fleet file”, in which the former President Traian B?sescu was investigated. Cristian Ene, Traian Basescu’s lawyer said that the case was quashed for lack of evidence. “The claimed facts do not have the necessary elements to advance to the next stage, the facts do not exist and prosecutors decided to close the case,” said Cristian Ene during telephone intervention to Digi24.

However, the case could be reopened if new evidence emerges. “If the prosecutors consider new documents or facts, they may also adopt a different attitude,” said Cristian Ene.

According to the DNA, the offence of abuse of office that targeted Traian Basescu does not exist, as during his office in the Transportation Ministry during 1990-1992 and 1996-2000 he didn’t make or did not determine any damage to the CNM Petromin SA Constanta patrimony, Mediafax informs. The prosecutors say the vessels had been sold on the basis of approvals from the State Property Fund (FPS) – minority shareholder of CNM Petromin SA in the privatisation process decided by the Romanian government.

“The 16 vessels under management contract with Klaveness group remained the property of CNM Petromin SA until 1999-2000 when they were sold by auction. The vessels were sold for USD 63,134,735. The decision to sell them was not with the Transportation Ministry but with FPS and the CNM Petromin SA general assembly, as the FPS was the majority shareholder,” the DNA informs.
