Update: Two criminal files opened on tennis legend Ilie Năstase’s name. For driving under the influence, for driving without license. He blames brutal treatment
Former tennis legend, Ilie Năstase, was caught on Friday morning in Bucharest driving under influence. The policemen say he swore them and became refractory, reason for which he was handcuffed.
The former tennis player showed signs of having consumed alcohol, and when the Police asked him for biological samples to be collected, Ilie Nastase refused and insulted them.
The representatives of the Bucharest Traffic Brigade announced that at around 4.45h on North Road in the area of the Embassy of China, police officers stopped a 72-year-old man for control.
According to the quoted source, the person was former tennis player Ilie Nastase.
Since he was in an obvious state of intoxication, he was requested to be tested with the alcohol tester, when he became recalcitrant, insulted the police officers, reason for which he was handcuffed and taken to the forensic institute (INML) for biological sampling.
Ilie Năstase also refused tests and biological samples and was taken to the headquarters of the Traffic Brigade, where he was charged with driving a vehicle under the influence of alcoholic drinks and with refusing to have biological samples collected.
Finally, the breathe analyser revealed 0.54 mg/l of alcohol, judicial sources say.
The second file
Several hours later, Ilie Nastase was again taken over to the police precinct, after being stopped in traffic driving a motor scooter, soon after leaving the Floreasca Hospital. In order to drive a motor scooter, one needs a driving license. But Nastase’s license had been suspended when he was stopped near Herastrau Park, hours earlier. The Traffic Police informs that Ilie Nastase was stopped in traffic, on Friday, in the neighbourhood of Floreasca Hospital, driving a motor scooter without license.
Consequently, a second criminal file has been opened on Nastase’s name, for driving while having the driving license suspended.
Nastase blames brutal treatment
“The Militia, I cannot call it Police because policemen are not aggressive. I walked two metres out of Herastrau Park and they stopped me. Have you had drinks? Yes, three beers. Come on, you’ve had much more. They asked me to blow in the breath analyser. I said no, I want to go to the Militia and blow. One of them pulled me out of the car, he pressed my face on the asphalt, climbed on me, and put on handcuffs. Somehow they beat me before. After the alcohol test, which showed 0.05%, another militiaman showed up and said blood samples are needed, because ‘he drank’. I’ve had also a drug test made. These people are mad. 0.05% – this is what the minute reads. There were two of them. I was sick because of the handcuffs,” Ilie Nastase has told Antena 3 TV.
Ilie Nastase threatens he would address the ECHR.
“I was told these are the procedures when you refuse to comply and you are aggressive. Maybe I was aggressive, only verbally. I could not be physically. They just wait and stay on lurk. Not just for me, for everyone. What can one do in this area? Eat and drink. When you tell them you’ve had three beers and he says you’ve had more, how do you react? I will address the ECHR. Mrs. Minister and the State Secretary would not answer the phone. I was told I was public menace,” Nastase said.
“What was the danger about, they’ve stopped me after three metres. They filmed only after I was taken in their car. They’ve filmed only what they wanted. At the police precinct they laughed, happy they’ve caught a large fish. I’ll go to have a medical certificate. I’ll address the ECHR. They should have acted in another way. Three police cars were there. I believe they would not act this way even if I was a terrorist,” Ilie Nastase added.
