MAE: Romanian citizens stranded in North Kivu province of Congo
They reportedly are Romanian mercenaries, contracted by Horatiu Potra.
The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that “a significant group” of Romanian citizens is stranded in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in a conflict zone where the government army is now under pressure from a rebel group. According to PressOne, these are Romanian mercenaries, contracted by Horațiu Potra.
The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced in a press release that a significant number of Romanian citizens are stranded in Goma, a city in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where an intense offensive by a paramilitary group called M23 is underway. This is supported by Rwanda, a country that, in the last two days, has massed its army on the border and there are even reports that its soldiers have entered Congo.
According to PressOne, an unspecified number of Romanian mercenaries, hired by Horațiu Potra (close to Călin Georgescu) are fighting alongside the Congolese government army and are now in a difficult situation. The MFA does not confirm their identity or number, only that it is significant:
“Requests for consular assistance have been received from their families. The long-standing conflict in the North Kivu region is evolving dynamically and unpredictably. The current situation on the ground is extremely volatile and dangerous,” the press release also states.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalls that it has issued a travel warning for the area and assures that it is in constant contact with the civilian and military bodies of the UN, as well as with those in the D.R. Congo, Uganda and Rwanda.
The province of North Kivu is located in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, on the border with Rwanda and Uganda, and Goma is the city of residence. In the area, a conflict is taking place between the M23 group and the state army, which is why civilians have left en masse.
