A drone fell in Romania in the border area with Ukraine, the Ministry of National Defense announces. According to the cited source, it crashed in the area of the town of Grindu in Tulcea county, in an uninhabited area.

“Based on the information from the field regarding a possible impact on the territory of Romania, mixed MApN/MAI teams moved during the night in the area and reported, this morning, that a 1.5 m deep crater was identified resulting as following the uncontrolled crash of a drone used in the attack on the Ukrainian port infrastructure, in an uninhabited perimeter located about 4 km upstream from the town of Grindu. Measures were taken to secure the area and the competent structures were notified to collect evidence and carry out investigations, according to the procedures”, according to the Romanian Ministry of Defense (MApN).

In retort, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Russian Ambassador to Bucharest, Valeri Kuzmin, following the crash of a new Russian drone in Romania.

The MFA “firmly protests against the incident caused by the uncontrolled crash of a drone used in the attack on Ukrainian port infrastructure on the night of December 13/14, within an uninhabited area approximately 4 km upstream from the locality of Grindu,” according to a statement from the MFA.

The institution states that ‘this represents a new violation of Romania’s airspace, contrary to international law.’ “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly calls for the cessation of repeated attacks against the Ukrainian population and civilian infrastructure, as well as the irresponsible escalation by the Russian Federation of the security situation, including at the border between Romania and Ukraine.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirms the strong condemnation of these attacks against civilian targets, which violate the norms of international humanitarian law and are considered war crimes,’ the MFA states. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has informed and is consulting with NATO allies on developments at the border between Romania and Ukraine, including today’s incident. Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will summon the head of the Russian diplomatic mission,” the statement concludes.

In the night from Wednesday to Thursday, the Russian forces continued the drone attacks on the Ukrainian port infrastructure, in the proximity of the border between Ukraine and Romania.

According to MApN, the ministry monitored the situation in the border area and activated Air Police procedures, also notifying the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations regarding the areas in Tulcea and Galați counties that could have been affected by the risks associated with this situation. The Inspectorate for Emergency Situations issued a RO-Alert message at 22:45, and the air alert status ended around 02:00.

F-16 aircraft of the Romanian Air Force from the 86th Air Base in Fetești and Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft of the German Air Force from the 57th Air Base “Mihail Kogălniceanu” were raised to perform surveillance missions of the national airspace.

From the beginning of September until now, four other drones fell on the territory of Romania on the border with Ukraine.

In October, the Minister of Defense, Angel Tîlvăr, declared that the aerial surveillance systems were supplemented in the Danube Delta, near the Ukrainian ports attacked by the Russian forces.
