Medgidia Court has ruled on Wednesday that former president Traian Basescu’s brother, Mircea Basescu, can be released from prison on parole. The ruling is not final and can be challenged.
Mircea Basescu was sentenced to four years in prison for influence peddling in the summer last year.
The Medgidia Court had to rule in Mircea Basescu’s case on July 12, but it postponed a decision for July 19. The ruling can be challenged by the National Anti-corruption Directorate at Constanta Tribunal.
This is the third request for release on parole filed by Mircea Basescu.
Medgidia Court Okayed Mircea Basescu’s release on parole twice, in the autumn of 2016 and early this year, but the two rulings have been challenged by the DNA, and Constanta Tribunal decided to admit the anti-corruption prosecutors’ appeal in both cases, so the former president’s brother remained behind bars.
Mircea Basescu is serving his prison sentence at the Poarta Alba Penitentiary, but he has had a open detention regime since February, being relocated to the exterior section of the penitentiary.
Mircea Basescu has been sentenced to four years in prison in June last year for influence peddling in the file where he was prosecuted for receiving EUR 250,000 to intervene before a magistrate to save interloper Sandu Anghel, aka Bercea Mondial, from executing a jail sentence.
