The National Penitentiary Agency (ANP) has notified the Prosecutor General’s Office about businessman George Becali for blackmail against a penitentiary director.
Spokesperson of the National Administration of Penitentiaries, Carmen Utoiu, said that, following the verifications made in this case, the results obtained were assessed by the competent institutions, including the Public Ministry.
According to the Federation of Trade Unions in ANP, Becali intervened during a television show on August 19, where he claimed to have sent a series of threatening messages to the director of the Jilava Penitentiary on the grounds that the latter would not approve a leave for his cousin, Victor Becali.
George Becali risks further imprisonment of up to five years, to which could add up to half of the sentence applied for committing the relapse offense, plus the remainder of the sentence not enforced due to the conditional release.
Businessman George Becali was released from prison on April 3, 2015, through a final sentence by the Constanţa Court.
Sentenced to jail in 2013, George Becali was transferred, upon request, from the Jilava Penitentiary to the ‘Poarta Alba’ Penitentiary, being imprisoned in open regime. He had been sentenced to three and a half years in prison after receiving three years of detention for land exchanges with the Ministry of National Defence, to which it added another six months sentence in the ‘Suitcase’ file.
