OMV Petrom, sentenced for manslaughter
Ploiesti Court has sentenced OMV Petrom to pay a criminal fine of RON 38,000 (around EUR 81, 500) and to pay compensations of EUR 135,000 in the case of a child who died of intoxication near a gas well in Ploiesti four years ago. The court’s ruling is not final yet.
The file in which OMV Petrom has been sent to court for manslaughter has lasted two years.
In February 2014, a nine-year-old boy died intoxicated with gas near a gas well in Aricestii Rahtivani locality. The well was operated by OMV Petrom and was unfenced.
Judges have sentenced the oil company to pay a fine of RON 380,000, meaning 200 days of fine for which it has to pay RON 1,900.
The child’s parents must receive moral compensations of EUR 35,000 each, and each of the boy’s four brothers, will get EUR 13,000 each.
The Prosecutor’s Office sent OMV Petrom to court in 2015, on the ground that the company’s representatives hadn’t fenced in the well.
