One in Five Children Fails to Complete School on Time in Romania
More than a quarter of Romanian teenagers smoke, more than half drink alcohol.
One in five Romanian children does not finish school on time, over half a million children had at least one parent away at work, and Romanian children continue to be the most vulnerable in the European Union, 41.5% of them learning are at risk of poverty or social exclusion, according to the Save the Children organization, which made an x-ray of the child’s situation in Romania. The same analysis shows that over a quarter of Romanian teenagers smoke, more than half of them consume alcohol, and 14% admitted that they gambled for money.
According to the analysis, many Romanian children have frequent sleep-related problems (with an incidence that reaches over 41% in the case of 15-year-old girls), they often feel nervous (with an incidence of up to 57% also in the case of 15-year-old girls), they feel alone frequently or permanently (32% of 15-year-old girls).
The same report reveals that one in five Romanian children does not finish school on time, Romania being the EU member state with the lowest level of participation in education at the age of completion of compulsory education (81%). The percentage of school non-participation increases with age, reaching 13.25% for 14-year-olds, 17.26% for 15-year-olds and 19.01% for 16-year-olds.
Annually, over 7,000 children are born to underage mothers. Although they have not yet reached the age of majority, almost 1,200 of these mothers are on their second or even third births.
More than half a million children (536,000) recently had at least one parent work abroad, while more than half of Romanian children (55.1%) want to leave the country and settle abroad.
At the same time, 46% of children say that their parents resort to corporal punishment, a much higher percentage than parents who admit to using such punishment.
According to the OECD, Romania is one of the states where the performance gap generated by the socioeconomic status of students reaches the highest level.
Of the notifications regarding criminal acts of sexual abuse of minor victims, less than 20% are completed by sending the aggressors to court.
