One Romanian dead, one injured, two missing after two vessels collide in the English Channel

Four Romanian nationals were aboard a vessel that collided with another vessel in the English Channel. One has died, another one is injured and has been hospitalised and is out of danger, other two are missing, the Romanian Foreign Ministry (MAE) informs.

“According to information delivered by the British authorities, during the night of August 5 to August 6, 2017, a boat having on board a group of four Romanian citizens collided with another vessel. Following the impact, one Romanian citizen has died, one has been hospitalized in Worthing, being out of danger, and other two are gone missing,” MAE informs.

According to, one man has been rescued and taken to hospital after being found in the water by fishermen.  Another survivor was reportedly found washed up on the shore nearby. One of the boats involved was said to have been manned by a Romanian crew.

A fleet of lifeboats and two coastguard helicopters have been sent as part of a major search operation to find survivors. Other boats in the area are also helping with the rescue operation, the Shoreham lifeboat said on Twitter, the same source reports.

A Sussex Police spokesman said it was assisting the coastguard “after a man was pulled alive from the sea by fishermen just after dawn on Sunday”.

The body of the dead man was found at around 8.15am (local time). An investigation involving the Marine Accident Investigation Branch has been launched.

British newspapers claim that two small vessels collided around 2 miles from the coast of the town Shoreham-by-Sea, one of them sinking. The latter craft had four persons on board.

The Romanian Consul in London went to the hospital where the Romanian national is hospitalized to find details about his health status.

MAE informs that the embassy and the consular office are closely following the case and the searches for the two missing Romanians, being in constant contact with local authorities, ready to grant support and consular assistance.

MAE conveys sincere condolences to the family of the deceased Romanian.
