Three mountain rescuers from Vatra Dornei who were trying to climb the tricolor flag on the Calimani Mountains have been caught by an avalanche, being stuck under the snow banks. One of them, the one who had sounded the alarm about the avalanche, has been eventually rescued, but the other two colleagues were less fortunate. One of the two, a woman gas been found dead, while searches for the third one have been stopped due to the straong blizzard. Searches haven’t been resumed as the risk of a new avalanche was too high.
The man called the 112 service around 17:17 and announced that he and other two colleagues had been caught under snow by an avalanche while climbing down the peak, Pietrosul Calimanilor.
“The man has been found and he is to be climbed down from the mountains. He is aware, unfortunately we don’t know what happened to the other two colleagues caught up by the avalanche,” said the head of the Mountain Rescue Service in Romania, Sabin Cornoiu.
The rescue teams are keep on searching the area to find the missing mountain rescuers.
According to the Department for Emergency Situations, mixed teams are acting to find the missing mountain rescuers: 38 fire fighters, 14 mountain rescuers and two workers at the Calimani reservation with nine aerial platform trucks, a roll-off truck, a SMURD ambulance and several cross-country vehicles.
Tourists caught up by avalanche in Parang, 38yo man found dead
Three tourists have been also seized by an avalanche on Friday, this time on Cârja Peak in Parâng Massif, with one of them, a 38-year-old man from Bucharest being found dead.
The director of the Hunedoara Mountain Rescue Service said the tourists caught up by the avalanche had been warned not to leave the chalet on Friday morning, but they ignored the mountain rescuers’ warnings. The head of the mountain rescuers said though the tourists were very well equipped and they even had devices to track down avalanches.
The avalanche dragged down the tourist who died one kilometer and knocked him down on the cliffs. His mates found him, but unfortunately he was dead, he had injuries incompatible with life. The man was on holiday in the mountains.
The bad weather with heavy snowfall and blizzard is to seize almost all mountain areas this weekend. Meteorologists have issued a new code yellow alert on Friday for snowfall and blizzard in the mountain areas of no less than 14 counties in Moldova, Muntenia and Transylvania starting as of Saturday morning. The warning is valid in Suceava, Neamț, Bacău, western Vrancea, Covasna, Harghita, cmost part of Brașov, southern Dâmbovița, Argeș, Vâlcea and Gorj counties, and northern Hunedoara, Alba and Sibiu counties.
The rest of the country will be seized by rainfalls, snowfalls and strong wind.
