Orange code for snowfall in force: People and vehicles buried in snow, including coaches transporting children, cancelled train, delayed flights and closed roads

On Friday Romanian meteorologists have updated the weather alert that came into force as Thursday evening, restricting the code orange for heavy snowfall only to ten counties and Bucharest, instead of 14 counties. However, other 17 counties are under a code yellow alert.

According to the new updated forecast, the code orange for heavy snowfalls and low visibility have seized Bucharest and other ten counties: Tulcea, Galaţi, Brăila, Ilfov, Călăraşi, Buzău, Prahova, Dâmboviţa, Teleorman and Giurgiu, so most part of Muntenia, Dobruja and southern Moldavia. The wind is blowing with 50-60kmph and sometimes even with 70kmph.

Winter is also back in most part of Moldavia, eastern Oltenia and in the mountains (Banat Mountains, Southern Carpathians and Curvature Carpathians).

On Friday starting 7 a.m., the road traffic was closed on the A2 highway between Bucharest and Drajna due to the strong snowstorm and low visibility. Traffic was also closed down on four other national roads in Vrancea, Buzau, Ialomita and Braila counties. Traffic was temporarily stopped on Brasov-Bucharest route on DN 1, at km 74, near Liliesti locality in Prahova county, due to a chain accident involving seven cars and a SMURD ambulance. No one was injured.

At the same time, traffic on nine national roads is restricted for vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons, on DN2A between Slobozia and Urziceni, on DN1A, between Dârste and Cheia, on DN 10, between Buzău and Covasna, on DN 2F, between Vaslui and Dragomireşti, on DN 13A, between Miercurea Ciuc and Odorheiu Secuiesc, on DN 13B, between Praid and Gheorgheni, DN1B, between Buzău and Mizil, on DN3, between Ştefăneşti and Cuza-Vodă and on DN3A, between Lehliu-Gară and Drajna, for vehicles>7.5 tons.

Bara Sulina dn Midia Port are currently closed, due to the strong wind.

More than 60 trains cancelled

CFR has cancelled at least 63 trains on Friday morning, while others have delays up to one hour. The biggest delay in North Station in Bucharest has been reported at the train arriving from Constanta, a 45 minute-delay.

The delayed trains were travelling between Bucharest and Constanta, Tulcea and Bucharest, Ciulniţa and Slobozia, Constanţa – Buzău and others.

However, so far no railway line has been closed.

Air traffic, messed up, delays but no cancellations in Bucharest

Snowfalls have also disturbed the air traffic, yet no flights have been cancelled, only reporting delays, which can reach 40 minutes.

No flight has been cancelled on Henri Coanda International Airport in Bucharest due to the weather conditions. Some flights though report delays at takeoff mainly caused by the deicing procedures of the planes. Delays can exceed 40 minutes,” reads a release by the National Bucharest Airport Company.

A coach with 22 children from Greece was stuck in the snow in Bucharest on Friday, in front of the Military Academy. Children have been taken over by other cars and the coach has been eventually got out of snow.

In Pantelimon locality near Bucharest, a private ambulance transporting a patient for dialysis has got stuck in the snow, while in Bragadiru, another ambulance could not advance due to the snow. The doctor needed to walk through the snow to get to the 85yo patient.

Another coach transporting 31 children and six adults has slid in Reghin town, Mures county on Friday morning. The children have been taken over by two minibuses and accommodated to a school in town.

Bucharest mayor: Spring comes on Wednesday

Bucharest mayor, Gabriela Firea announced the spring will come into force next week, as of Wednesday, while congratulating director of the National Meteorology Administration, Gabriela Bancila, for the “precise forecast”, although it’s about a bad weather one. “Those who are attacking ANM are only hurting a major institution,” Firea said on Friday when the Meteorology Day is also celebrated.

Spring is coming as of Wednesday, so help us God!,” the mayoress said, adding that it will rain on Monday and Tuesday.
