Polar Air Mass Sweeps Across the Country Bringing Freezing Temperatures, Sleet and Snow
A polar air mass is bringing heavy snowfall and blizzards, causing difficult travel conditions in seven counties across the country where sleet and snow are present. Cold temperatures have already set in, and the mercury is lower than usual for the beginning of December.
There is a sleet and snow alert, and in Moldova and the mountains, a layer of snow has already accumulated. Meteorologists forecast that snowfall will continue in the mountains and in Moldova, where it will be coldest, with temperatures dropping below 0 degrees Celsius. In the rest of the country, there will be mixed precipitation, and isolated areas may experience freezing rain.
Additionally, strong winds will blow, and the wind chill will make it feel much colder, with temperatures struggling to surpass 3 degrees Celsius today. In the coming days, temperatures will not exceed 8 degrees Celsius.
Tomorrow, snow and sleet will begin in the southwest regions and later spread to the southeast of the country. At the beginning of the weekend, there will be mixed precipitation in the central, western, and southeastern regions, and then it will persist in the intracarpathian regions. Meanwhile, snowfall will continue in the mountains.
In Bucharest, winter weather is expected with mixed precipitation, and snowfall will predominate in the evening. Thermometers will not rise above 2 degrees Celsius.
The Infotrafic Center reported on Thursday morning that roads are generally wet, with precipitation in the form of rain, but sleet and snow have been reported in the mountainous areas of Argeș, Brașov, Buzău, Covasna, Harghita, Prahova, and Vrancea counties, without significant wind intensification. On major roads, including the A1 Bucharest-Pitești, A2 Bucharest-Constanța, A3 Bucharest-Ploiești, and DN1 Ploiești-Brașov, traffic is moving on wet roads with precipitation in the form of rain, occasionally mixed with sleet and snow.”
